This post was inspired by a recent episode of Law and Order SVU. They be bringing those topics. But anyway the episode dealt with buying organs off of the black market. It also posed some very interesting issues on both sides of the coin such as: how do you save your dying child when the only way in which they can get the organ they need is through this black market (The movie John Q comes to mind . . . Love that movie by the way) and how do you choose who is "worthy" of being on the top of the list for donees when your on the administrative side, especially when you have so many people who could possibly die if not treated immediately.
I actually have a friend who is going through this process right now. She is a very strong individual, with her family being a strong security net. My heart and soul goes out to any one who is going through this or has gone through this . . .
Now into the meat of the matter. While I can see both sides and understand where each side is coming from there has to be a right answer or at least an answer that allows less people to die. Personally, if it was my family I would go to the ends of the earth to make sure that they would doing whatever necessary to ensure that they got out of this situation alive (especially if I know that all they need is a _____________ and they would be saved). Why is there even a black market for these parts . . . if there are ppl out there willing to sell these parts why not just readily make them available as long as it is not life threatening or at least provide a way in which they could give it to hospital without any hassle. I know part of it is greed and keeping a corner of the market . . . but come on there are ppls lives at stake because of this . . .
Well enough of my soapbox what are your thoughts on the topic . . . Should we support a black market for this or should we change the system that allows ppl to die just because they are not high up on a list . . . Also suggestions on how we can change this would be greatly appreciated . . . I gave my two cents . . . your turn :)!

Maybe when people learn to become less greedy it will be more tolerated. As it stands right now there is no guarantee that the trafficked organs parted with their "donors" voluntarily. That's basically like saying one life is more important than the next.
ReplyDeleteAt least with the hospitals the volunteer status is verified and the meet with a psychiatrist prior to the "donation" so they can understand all the potential future reprucussions. On the street yes they may pay you if your lucky but they wont explain your potential shortness of breath or inabilities to do everyday activities that you once enjoyed.
I think hospitals have their systems they have in place for a reason. We may not agree with those reasons but everything is on a case by case basis so it's not just a one size fits all basket
